Botox Cures Migraines – Really?

Wednesday, October 5th, 2011

I have had Headaches and Migraines Headaches since I was at least 7 years old, I am now in my 30′s. Over the many years I’ve read and heard about all kinds of Migraine cures — most are just scams, plus a waste of time and money. I recently was introduced to Botox as the next best thing to cure or lessen Migraines by a friend. She said she receives Botox treatment twice a year and has no occurrence of Migraine during the time in between injections of Botox. Since I’m a curious, yet skeptical person I decided to make an appointment with a doctor who specializes in Botox treatment for Migraines. When I called the office to make an appointment the receptionist confirmed they do Botox treatment for Migraines, it’s not the majority of the practice, but they do a lot. So I scheduled an appointment.

Two weeks came around, I showed up for the appointment and was almost immediately brought into the exam room. The doctor showed up literally a minute later. To bad the Endocrinologists can’t be that efficient, am I right?

I started asking questions of the doctor about Botox and how it works. His answers all made sense, but then I wanted to ask him how this all translates to using Botox for Migraine treatment. This is only my opinion based on my discussion with this doctor, this is what I learned… Botox treatments do NOT help with Migraine treatment, except maybe as a placebo. Botox might help muscular headaches, because Botox works by relaxing muscle contractions. Migraines are vascular. When I asked him directly how a toxin that works on muscles can also work on the vascular system, he suggested I might be right, but he wanted to refer me to a neurologist who specializes in Botox treatment for Migraines.

I haven’t gone to see this doctor because his office visit is $650 and doesn’t include any Botox if we were to agree it might be helpful. That would most likely run $200 to $400 extra.

In my opinion, based on this experience and other reading I have done, the thought that Botox will help with Migraine treatment is incorrect. Most likely the “Migraine” sufferers are most likely experiencing muscular tension headaches and not Migraines. We all know people who think they get Migraines, but really it’s just a headache.

What’s your opinion? Leave me a comment and I’ll respond.
